International talk like a pirate day:

International talk like a pirate day was created on September the 19th 1995 by John Baur and Mark Summers. It is when everybody in the world talks like a pirate all day long. One day Baur and Summers were playing a game of racquetball when Baur accidently hit Summers, he then yelped out “arrr” instead of “ow”. That’s when the day was born. They would never remember that day so they chose Summers wife’s birthday. It was first an inside joke for the two friends but they wrote it to an American columnist called Dave Barry in 2002. Barry liked the idea and promoted the day. Growing media coverage ensured that this event will be celebrated internationally. They made books and a website about the day and how they came up with it. The association of pirates with peg legs, parrots, and treasure maps was popular in a novel/movie called Treasure Island. The book/novel was made by Robert Louis Stevenson.

The Jolly Roger flag, with its black background and white skull and cross bones, was designed to be fierce. This flag wasn’t used all pirates often it was flown by those sailing in the Spanish Main. Pirates had the idea that wearing ear piercings would improve their bad eye sight. Pirates had in mind that having any woman on their ship was bad luck. The also believed that when they whistle on their ship would cause the weather to become stormy. Pirates would often take over island ports and make them a safe place to leave their ship. Nearly all pirates stole their ships because they couldn’t afford them and just encase they were caught and sent to jail. When they had taken over a ship they would change it to become suitable for pirate life and strengthening the deck to hold the heavy cannons. Other ships usually sail close to warships or joined other cruet ships to protect themselves. Pirates could only attack one ship at a time. Pirate captains would usually change out of their expensive clothes encase they were captured. This way they could pretend they were the only pirate crew. Pirates didn’t have proper talking parrots in their day. Although pirates have been around since the 15th century, most pirating happened between 1690 and 1720. On the Caribbean island of St Thomas you will find a place called ‘Black Beards Castle’. It is believed that this is where the famous pirate spent his many hours searching for approaching ship.
